By a Moorland Stream

This oil painting of sheep on the Yorkshire
Moors shows two Swaledale
sheep grazing beside a typical moorland stream.
I love the rich colours of the heather, bracken, and distant hills,
the brushwork quick and loose, echoes the freedom and raw nature
of the moors. Of course the 'raw nature' is an illusion, formed
by generations of hard work by the hill
farmers with all
their knowledge and skilled management of the grazing sheep.
