Leslie Stones Art & Design
Leslie now feels that after 30 years of painting experience, the last 12 professionally, the earlier years of experimenting with various
styles and techniques have led him back to his love of the British countryside. Using the knowledge gained over these years,
his style of modern traditional, landscape, beach and animal paintings in oil, are what he is happiest painting.
The above paintings are are all oils on either board or canvas, and usual sizes are from 6 x 8 to 10 x 14 inches for paintings on boards, and 12 x 16 to 18 x 24 inches for paintings on canvas. The boards are first prepared with 3 coats of artists acrylic gesso primer, using loose and random brush strokes to create a textured surface to paint upon. Canvas is usually oil, or sometimes acrylic primed linen, with a medium weave or texture. Both boards and canvases are usually given a mid tone wash of weak Burnt Sienna, which often shows through beneath any loosely applied brushstrokes, giving an overall harmony.

The oil paints used for all the paintings are Winsor & Newton ' Griffin' Alkyds, artists quality fast drying oil colours. Colours used, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium,
Cadmium Lemon, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Viridian ( a green to be used sparingly ), and Titanium White.
Two colours from Winsor & Newton's ' Winton' range are also used, Cobalt Violet Hue number 16, and Viridian number 43.

Ordinary turpentine is used for washing brushes, but only artist quality distilled turpentine is used as a painting medium for both initial blocking in and early colour mixes - less medium is used as the painting progresses. Favourite brushes are
'Galleria' Filbert sizes 2 to 12. Leslie will be happy to answer any questions - contact details can be found on the Info page.
